The special care taken with raw materials is rarely applied to our energy.  Generating just what you need, is the first step to energy-efficient use. It is certainly not simple, as oversupply is not something you can spot easily.

There are 5 critical steps to Energy Efficiency from SMC
1. Generate

2. Recover
Trying to recycle the energy required in a productive process has an exponential effect on the plant’s efficiency.
We’re convinced that this is the path to be followed by industrial systems. It’s up to you to actively take part of it.
Recover what you generate at energy generation processes, or during its usage.
  • Re-use the generated heat - That heat can simply be reused for any other operation, such as warming water (thorough a heat exchanger) or heating up the plant (through hot air distribution).
  • Recover the released air - Have you ever considered recovering the air from your cylinders?

3. Monitor 
Which of the machines in your factory are the heaviest consumers, do you know how your consumption fluctuates.  Detecting mismatches or unexpected waste, giving you the visibility to further improve performance.

4. Use 
Use only the essential level of pressed air you require; energy inefficiency in a plant is frequently the consequence of misuse bolstered by the popular belief that "compressed air is free."
Misuse or sensible use, what’s your situation?  Are your components sized correctly?  Is the air distribution system designed taking into account energy efficiency?
When acquiring a new component, do you consider the ones with an energy-efficient design?

5. Think
To genuinely implement efficiency in our facilities, we need to try to see the energy-efficient potential in our day-to-day working activities and decisions.
Think of energising your efficiency.
In other words, Think efficient is what really helps us to come full circle. All the solutions offered in the 4 previous steps (Generate, Recover, Monitor & Use) have not been thought out as a random and unconnected set of actions, but rather than as a continuum.

SMC Automatic Leakage Dection 
20% of air is wasted from the Compressed Air Systems. In terms of euros, for some of you it may be very little but for others it will be thousands.
Let's put it in these terms: can you imagine wasting an hour and a half of your working day? You wouldn't want your employees doing nothing for an hour and a half each day as that would be inefficient and a waste of money. This is exactly the same as the air leakage occurring in your pneumatic system.
The A.L.D.S. is based on a manifold block consisting of a standard SMC series PFM flow meter plus the introduction of a diverting valve which is installed in the machines main air supply. The valve is operated using sequence instruction which are integrated in the machines operating software.
Using a pre programmed "check leakage cycle" each compressed air circuit on the machine can be individually monitored and records can then be issued as a report to the maintenance departments
Once up and running in your machine the ALDS will:
  • Detect air leakages as and when they occur - even on a daily basis
  • Confirm the exact value of the leak in I/m
  • Provide maintenance personnel with a detailed report on where the leakages are located without the need to detect individual components
  • Operate and detect leakages even when the machine is in operation
  • Be integrated in the machine's software without the need for any external supervision system - scad etc.
